Autism Awareness Day Decorating

Autism Awareness Month [VIDEO]

VIDEO TRANSCRIPTS:

[Bethany] So, April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism affects many families. In fact, one in fifty-nine children are diagnosed autistic every year. How can we create a door that shows our support and raises awareness?

[Erin] Well, the National Autism Society Ribbon uses bright primary colors and puzzle pieces. We should use the three primary colors, red, yellow and blue for our door.

[Alexis] And, definitely some puzzle pieces.

[Bethany] And I have a little something special plan for this door. But, Iā€™m keeping it a secret for now. Letā€™s decorate!

[music]

Puzzle Piece DIY:

Step #1: Trace the shape on cardboard

Step #2: Cut out shape

Step #3: Apply white layer of paint

Step #4: Apply colored layer of paint

Step #5: Apply final touches

[Bethany] Now for the surprise. For this front door, I thought it would be appropriate to create a sensory station. I used materials such as sand, water beads, Play-doh, and bubbles.

Sensory stations teach children the differences between objects using the five senses. They are beneficial for all children,

including those with autism.
