Things to Do for Dad on Father’s Day

Father’s Day Activities and Gift Ideas

As the patriarch of the family, dad deserves some special celebrating and Father’s Day is just the day to give him his due. Gifts and favorite foods may be in order along with Father’s day activities that will make him feel honored and loved. We have gathered together several Father’s day ideas to provide some inspiration on how you can celebrate the dads in your life.

Gear Up: Camping Supplies

Go Outside

Whether your dad wants to head to his favorite fishing hole, take a day hike or go all out and pitch a tent and go camping for the weekend, there are lots of ways to get out of the house and celebrate. Set up some backyard games and create your own dad Olympics without leaving the house.

Backyard Games

Play Games

For the sports-minded dads, tickets to see his favorite team play are always appreciated. Or treat him to a round of golf. Bring out his inner child and take him to an amusement park, go-cart track, or paintball course—any grown-up will appreciate the chance to let go and just have fun.

Have a Seat

Prep for your gathering by arranging outdoor furniture throughout your backyard space. Have places for everyone to gather on the patio or deck, but also hone in on welcoming areas under trees, beneath large umbrellas, or in a screened gazebo. You don’t have to cluster everyone all in one spot. In fact, give dad a place to grab that afternoon nap, like a hammock under a tree or a nice reclining lounge chair in the shade. Outdoor side tables add a nice touch, too.

Get Crafty (with Beverages!)

Not the arts and crafts kind—think more like the beer kind. Craft beer has become a well-loved “hobby” where dad can really become an avid fan. Look for local beer festivals, tastings, and pubs dedicated to all things craft beer. You might add a beer-making kit to his gift list!

See Some Music

When was the last time dad saw a live band? Whether it’s a local band in a nearby club, or if one his favorite national touring acts happen to be coming through his town, this provides the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time while enjoying some good tunes too.

Send Him to the Spa

Pampering and relaxation are not reserved just for the moms out there. Dad will appreciate some downtime, especially when it includes a massage, a steam room and the solitude that can be found at a spa.

Personalized Gifts for Him

Get Personal

A personalized gift shows a lot of thought and care and makes it uniquely his, from monogrammed robes to personalized cocktail shakers. Or, features the logo of his favorite sports team. Plan ahead when choosing personalized gifts, since they often require extra time when ordering. Looking for more inspiration on the best gifts for men? We’ve got you covered.

Tempt His Tastebuds

If dad likes to do the cooking, then arm him for battle with a grill set or pull together a Father’s Day gift basket with all the fixin’s he would love to have on hand. Five different kinds of mustard? Cajun barbecue rubs? A month’s supply of flavored jerky? The possibilities are endless. Give a food gift that caters to dad’s taste, and you’re golden.

Serve It Up

Father’s Day just wouldn’t be the same without a celebratory meal. Gather family and friends and serve up dad’s favorites. It’s a great time of year to throw burgers, chicken, or pizza on the grill and have lots of sides and appetizers to nibble on throughout the day.

Get It Done!

Take care of dad’s usual weekend duties so that he can enjoy some downtime. Go ahead and mow the lawn, take out the trash, wash the windows, pull weeds—whatever is on his list, get it covered before he can even think about it. Father’s Day is the one day each year where we get to honor Dad and all that he means to the family.

Have a (Covered) Backup Plan

If the weather turns against you, be prepared to move the party under a gazebo or into the garage (but leave the grill outdoors!). A large umbrella will keep it and the chef dry.
