The general rule of thumb is to choose a side table that is about an inch or two below the furniture it is sitting beside. This provides a comfortable reach to use the table. Standard sofa arms range from 24 to 32 inches high, so measure before you shop. How about those instances when you aren’t placing it next to a chair or sofa, such as in an entryway or foyer? You can go a few inches higher—about 28-30 inches tall is about right. Keep in mind how you plan to use the table. If it is a sofa table meant to capture keys and mail, then keep it at about waist height. Go taller if it is solely meant to showcase decorative items.

Can side tables be more functional?
Of course! Look at nesting table options that offer the ability to un-nest and be used in multiple areas of the room. There are many side or end tables that feature shelves or drawers that provide added storage options as well. Some even spin to allow for easy accessibility and added flexibility. In today’s world, side tables with built-in charging stations can quickly become the family’s favorite.
