Coastal Living for Less

Convert Your Living Room Into a Beach Retreat

Long for the sound of crashing waves and the feel of sand between your toes? Make your living room your own beach retreat with a few easy details that wonā€™t break the bank. Bring coastal style to your living room with these coastal interior design ideas.

Gather Up Shells

Coastal living demands its share of seashells. Add coastal artwork to a wall art collage or displayĀ colorful coralĀ on a side table. A glass vase filled with seagrass and shells makes a perfect focal point for a coffee table or a centerpiece when dining.

Lighten Up with Ocean Themed Decor

Use beige, ivory, or gray fitted slipcovers to brighten the room and make it feel more spacious. Replace heavy winter drapes with semi-sheer panels. Let as much natural light into the room as possible. Light colored accents like seagrass baskets or a nauticalĀ vaseĀ filled with branches give the room a relaxed, soothing feel.

Coastal Style Furniture

Complement your current seating area with furnitureĀ made of seagrass, rattan or wood that looks as though it has been bleached by the sun with distressed wood tops and antiqued finishes.

We recently moved to Florida. We have 2 guest rooms. I plan on creating a tropical theme for each. We will be having lots of visitors! We live 3 miles from the beach. Any ideas for these rooms would be greatly appreciated. Not wanting to overdo. I love your catalogs. I do enjoy different ideas. something few others would have!!

Emily, thank you for commenting. A bold and adventurous tropical color palette will create a paradise in your guest bedrooms. From bright sunny yellows to lush greens, to fresh water blue to sunset red, these island-inspired colors will give your guest bedrooms a warm feel. Pick your favorite color and use it where youā€™ll see it the most often. Experiment with bold patterns. Be courageous and use a mix of patterns that are in the same palette of vibrant hues. Accessorize with pillows, decorative accessories in similar hues to unify the look. From the wall paint and bedding, a vivid combination of colors will create an exotic getaway for your guests.

As you are developing your tropical color palette, you may want to reach out to a trusted girlfriend or a local interior decorator to give you an extra set of eyes to help you pull together the overall look of your guest bedrooms.
